Chapter 17

It’s 9:30 when the Uber pulls up to the club, and I can hear the music from outside. “Thank you,” I say to the Uber driver as I leave the vehicle. Here goes nothing. I let out a breath and then walk through the front door.

The music is just as loud as the first time I stepped into the Red Horse, and memories of that night flash through my mind:our first kiss at the top of those stairs. I travel the staircase with my gaze. Joseph’s body pressed on mine against the front wall of my apartment building—our steamy moment in the shower. My thoughts flash forward to the moment he left me standing on the sidewalk, never to be seen again, and I have a moment of pause. What the hell am I doing here? Just as I’m about to make a run for it, the woman at the front door grabs my attention. “Can I help you? You look a little lost, Hun.” She says, in a southern accent.

“Yes, sorry, I’m here to see Joseph,” I say, gathering myself.

She nods and motions for me to follow. “Right this way, ma’am.” We walk together to the elevator, and she turns to look at me. “When you get inside, press 244 in the code entry, and it will bring you to his home.” Once I’m inside the elevator, she turns and walks back to her post at the front door.

The inside of the elevator is just like any other elevator I’ve ever been in, except for a small panel with a keypad above the regular numbers. I type 244 into the keypad, and the elevator starts to move.

I am on edge, and my nerves are pulled to their limit. I don’t know what to expect when I step through this door. Have I really forgiven him for what he did? Or was I just feeling bad for him in the moment? I guess we’ll find out in a moment.

The elevator dings, announcing my arrival at his home, but when the doors open, nobody’s in sight. “Hello?” I say, stepping out of the elevator.

His home has beautiful, large windows across the entire living space and a balcony to match. My eyes travel to the high ceilings with beautiful lights and fixtures hanging above. His kitchen is the size of my small apartment, and I gasp at how huge it is. I walk around the kitchen island, tracing my hand lightly across the marble. A moment later, I hear music coming from the hallway and decide to go towards it, hoping to find Joseph.

I pass multiple doors, but I don’t attempt to open any of them. I don’t want to invade his privacy when he isn’t around, so I just keep walking toward the door with the music coming from behind it. I knock. “Hello?” He doesn’t answer. “Joseph?” I say, knocking again and deciding to try the handle. It’s unlocked. I open the door slowly and peep around the doorway to see if I can see anyone inside, but the room is empty.
